This is a simplified guide on how to get up and running with Nuvio for free.

What is Nuvio?

Nuvio is an awesome open source piece of software that allows you, your friends, and even your grandma to stream movies, TV shows, and anime for free without ever paying a dime. It's not a scam, you never have to enter a credit card or give them your social security number.

Sadly, the software does not work on iPhones/iOS, so if that's the phone you have, this is not the guide for you. I will in the future write a guide for y'all.

First Steps: Is This Guide for You?

If you are currently using an Android phone, then this guide is definitely for you. If your computer is running Windows, Mac OS, or Linux, this guide is also for you. If you have an Android TV, definitely stick around because, you guessed it, this guide is for you.

Step 1: Download Nuvio

Firstly, we are going to navigate to https://nuvio.tv (you can click directly on the link to open it in a new tab).

In the middle of the page, you should see a button that says Get Nuvio, and another button to the right of that that says Read the source. For now, we are going to click the first button.

The page will scroll down and display some options for what platform you are on.

  • Android: Click the Android APK button to download the app.
  • Desktop: Click Desktop, then you will see options for Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. (Hint: the four blue squares are Windows/Microsoft, the gray apple is Mac OS, and the penguin is Linux.)

This will redirect you to GitHub.com. GitHub is a website where open source software is downloaded. This is also the part a lot of people get stuck on.

Underneath the Assets text towards the bottom of the page are the different types of installers. Don't worry if it looks confusing, I will explain it.

  • Android: If you are on an Android phone, you most likely have a modern phone. Look for the text that says androidApp-full-arm64-v8a-release.apk. It should be the very first one. Click that.
  • iOS: If you're on iOS and you know how to sideload, there is an IPA provided at the bottom, but that is outside the scope of this guide.
  • Windows: Find the file that ends with .msi. It will look something like Nuvio-Windows-x64-0.1.25-alpha.msi.
  • Mac OS: Choose one of the files ending in .dmg. Which one depends on when your computer was released. After 2020 would be arm64, and before then is x86_64.
  • Linux: This is also a bit more complicated, but for 90% of people I would suggest going with the AppImage, which should be the very first option. If you know what you're doing, feel free to select one for another distro.

Once you've clicked the correct file, wait for it to finish downloading before moving on to the next step.

Step 2: Install Nuvio

Now you have the installer downloaded. The next part of this will vary depending on the platform you are on.

Android

You'll want to find the APK. Most likely you'll see a bar toward the top of your screen (or maybe the bottom) that says your download is complete. Click the little Open button.

Otherwise, you will find it by clicking the three little dots in the upper right or lower right, finding Downloads, then finding the file you just downloaded and opening it.

It may prompt you to allow installs from unknown sources. Go through the steps that it provides. Usually this involves it automatically taking you to Settings, checking a box to allow installing from unknown sources, then going back and clicking Install again when it pops up.

Windows

You should find the installer in the Downloads folder of your computer. It will be an .msi file. This is a standard Windows file type for installers.

Just double-click to open it and follow the steps to install it. Use the default location, and if it asks for administrator permission, click Allow.

Mac OS

This is unknown territory for me, but if you've ever installed software before, I'm sure it'll be exactly like that.

Linux

If you got the AppImage, congratulations! You're almost there.

  1. Open your Downloads folder.
  2. Find the Nuvio AppImage you downloaded.
  3. Double-click it to run the program.

If double-clicking doesn't work: You may need to give the AppImage permission to run. Right-click the file, open Properties, and look for a setting such as Allow executing file as program or Executable. The exact wording depends on your desktop environment.

If you can't find that setting or the app still won't open, don't worry. There are other ways to get it running, and we can troubleshoot those separately.

Step 3: Create Your Account

Alright, finally we have it installed. Unfortunately, there's a few more major steps before we have everything ready to go.

Once you open the app, you should be at the Sign In screen. Find the Sign Up button to create an account.

This is where you put in an email and a password. Make sure it's something you can remember, but it doesn't have to be super complicated.

After that, you may be prompted to create or manage profiles. Follow the steps to do exactly that.

Now you should be in the app, and it's time to proceed to the next and final step.

Step 4: Set Up PenguPlay

We are going to set up PenguPlay by going to https://pengu.uk/.

You will need to authenticate with your Google account to gain access, or if you don't have a Google account, you can follow the steps under the access token.

For the purpose of this guide, I will assume that you have clicked and connected with your Google account.

At this point, you want to click where it says Copy Addon URL.

Now, back inside of Nuvio, we will go to Settings (indicated by a gear icon), then:

General > Content and Discovery > Addons

Paste the previously copied addon URL and click Install Addon.

If you've done everything correctly up to this point, it should say the addon was successfully added.

Go back to the Home page or Search to find a movie or show.

Once you've found something to watch, click Play and you should see a list of available qualities with information about each stream underneath.

For example, if it says Audio: Arabic, that indicates that the stream is in Arabic. If it's not specified, you can assume that it's in English.

Go ahead and click it and enjoy!

Bonus Tips!!!

  • If you are struggling to find shows, I would suggest going back to https://pengu.uk/ and exploring the options. Selecting more sources will provide more links and, in theory, more movies. Updates should be automatically reflected in Nuvio, and there is no need to reinstall the plugin.
  • If you've installed Nuvio on multiple devices, progress will be automatically synced between devices that are signed into the same account.
